MMVA Nelly Furtado - The Bigger the Better

I've always had a thing for Nelly Furtado.  There is something about her that is real, unique, and her artistry always speaks in volumes. She is one of the Canadian artists added to the MMVA performance line-up this Sunday which already includes Katy Perry, Justin Beiber, Carly Rae Jepsen and co-hosts LMFAO.

Her latest video "The Bigger the Better" doesn't showcase your typical back-up dancers but instead features some Native Indian dancers doing a traditional hula hoop dance.  Dressed in their colorful costumes, they perform rapid moves and construct hoop formations around the body.

The Native American Hoop Dances is used as a  form of storytelling where the hoops create different shapes and formations to represent symbols and animals like the butterfly, the eagle, the snake, and the coyote.  The originator of this dance was a young boy who had a fascination with animals and used the hula hoop  dance to teach his village about them and what they offered the planet.  Now you can see these dancers using up to 30 hoops to construct these various shapes.

To take the dance out of it's traditional setting and place it in a popular music video allows us to see and acknowledge other dance forms and their social significance.  Good on Nelly and her team for adding it to her glam stilt-walking and original eclectic looks.  Can't wait to see what she has in store for us at the MMVA's.  Remember to tune in this Sunday at 9pm to catch all the action!
